In 1966, OMS Montessori began offering Montessori education to a small number of children between 3 and 6 years of age under the name Ottawa Montessori School. Twenty years later we purchased two buildings in Alta Vista and added a ‘link’ to make it one school. In 2003 we offered a Junior High Program for grades 7 and 8 and by 2009, a High School became a strategic goal. In 2012 that goal was implemented and we now offer High School at The Element.
OMS Montessori is a not-for-profit private school offering an authentic Montessori education in the nation’s capital. At OMS Montessori, we have a rich community of students with diverse abilities, interests, cultures and needs. The curriculum we offer is internationally recognized and implemented in schools across Canada, the United States and throughout the world. We are licensed under the Day Nurseries Act, listed as a private school on the Ministry of Education’s website, and The Element has the authority to grant credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Of over thirty self-proclaimed Montessori schools in Ottawa, OMS Montessori is one of only two CCMA accredited schools, and is recognized as a leading Montessori school in Canada.
OMS Montessori currently serves just under 300 students and is constantly evolving to serve each new generation of students in an exemplary way. OMS Montessori purchased the current property in 1986 and has since added multiple new additions and upgraded the original facilities. We have 9 large, bright fully equipped Montessori classrooms, 5 spacious and inviting Second Language classrooms, and a cheerful, child friendly library. We have a full sized, naturally lit and well-equipped gymnasium, a dedicated art resource room and a dedicated music room. Classes have gardens which are cared for by the students. There is also a quiet garden and spaces within the school for quiet reflection. We have three separate playgrounds to accommodate daily outdoor play for different ages. The idea of a natural playground with lots of opportunity for gross motor activities came to life during a strategic planning process that was undertaken in 2009 by parents, staff members and the Board. In 2013 this idea became a reality. Shortly after, the company who built our natural playground was presented with a Landscape Ontario Award of Excellence for our playground making OMS home to an award winning natural playground. The natural playground supports our vision by encouraging engagement and continual learning through the exploration of natural elements.
